Plastic bottle tops can be recycled now but don’t leave them screwed tight on the bottle

You may notice next time you go to a Guernsey bring bank that there is a notice below the openings to the bring banks for plastic.

No bottle top notice below openings to bring banks for plastic

The notice says "No bottle tops - Remove and dispose of before recycling."

With the advent of bring bank recycling for plastic number 5 (PP) and plastic number 6 (PS) this sign can be IGNORED.  PLASTIC BOTTLE TOPS CAN BE RECYCLED NOW.

However Liam Bourgaize, Depot Manager, at Mayside Recycling Ltd. said it was important to separate the bottle tops from the bottles or else loosen them from the bottle so that the bottles could be compressed and squashed in the baling plant. Plastic bottles that had tightened plastic bottle tops sometimes exploded when they were compressed and baled under high pressure.

Mayside Recycling depot manager asks that bottle tops be removed from plastic bottles and added to the recycling bring bank separately to make it easier to compress the bottles during the baling operation.
